After trying to find donations, supplies and funds for our events and projects, it became difficult to gain sponsors, so Rhonda Harper started Inkwell Surf’s lifestyle brand to help fund the surf and skate club. In order to be an active member in our club you must receive a c average or better. Because of this phenomenal story and history, Rhonda Harper began a surf and skate club which allowed disadvantaged and inner city kids the opportunity to get transported to the beach for free surf lessons, the history of the beaches, and where surfing began, and free tutoring for those that needed help with school. On February 14th 2006 Inkwell Surf went down to Santa Monica City Hall where we asked the council in consideration of Black History Month, to consider placing a plaque at Inkwell Beach memorializing the location and Nicolas Gabaldon. Nick was found 3 days later by his surfing buddies and is now at peace in the Santa Monica Cemetery. In 1951 Nick and Bob Hogan surfed one of the biggest swells of that time, and while Bob called out to Nick to ‘pull out’ Nick unfortunately did not and he ended up passing away when he hit the pier. Some of Nick’s closest friends were Les Williams, Buzzy Trent, Ricky Grigg, Mickey Munoz, Bob Hogan and a few others that surfed in Malibu.

Nick was known for introducing Aggie Quigg, Joe Quigg’s wife, (Joe Quiggs had a major surfboard company)) to riding tandem. Inkwell beach was also known as home to the first documented surfer of African and Hispanic descent, Nicolas Gabaldon. In the 1920’s and 1930’s, Inkwell Beach was 200ft of roped off sand for ‘Negroes Only’. INKWELL NEWS – Inkwell Surf was built on inspiration from the Inkwell Beach in Santa Monica, CA.
